We are 2 hours by car from Varna; 3 from Bourgas and Bucharest; 1 from Ruse and 4 and 1/2 from Sofia.
People drive on the right hand side here. Outside the big cities, there is very little traffic and you’ll get to see lots of the country on route, passing through many villages. Watch out for the horse and carts!
If coming from Sofia, we recommend a stop off in Veliko Tarnovo. It’s a beautiful old town and a nice stop-off for lunch.
Car rental companies
It’s possible to rent a car from Bucharest or Sofia airports.
Also possible to get a taxi or bus from Bucharest airport and rent from a local company in Ruse. Some people prefer this option to navigating through Bucharest and the border crossing.
All the well known companies such as Global, Europcar and Hertz have offices in Bulgaria. Listed below are a couple of alternative car rental companies that come recommended by guests. There are plenty more listed on the web.
- Top Rent A Car – recommended by some of our guests. Sofia company that speak very good English; are very helpful and very reasonably priced. Will meet you off the plane with a name card.
- Kamen Cars – in Veliko Tarnovo. They can do a drop off at Wild Thyme for an extra fee (enquire with them)
- Iko86 – Located in Ruse
